Figure Skating Programs 2010-2011

Skills, Tests, Achievement, Recognition - StarSkate offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating.

Our fully sanctioned StarSkate Figure Skating programs provide a seamless move from Level 6 CanSkate into the upper levels of figure skating. Once Canskate Level 6 is completed, they can they move up to the Junior level which is our entry level in our StarSkate program. We offer a progression through 4 levels where participants will work closely with private coaches as well in small groups to hone their skills, stroking and dances.

In order for a skater to learn the skills and dances to move through the STARSkate program, it is necessary to engage a coach who will provide private lesson time within the program sessions. It is important to choose a coach with whom the skater is comfortable. The hiring of a coach and all private lessons must be arranged directly with the coach and not through the ASC office. A list of our coaches and their contact numbers are provide here.

Test and Competitive streams are available within this program and off-ice conditioning programs will also be made available as an option for those wishing to work on balance, strength and coordination.

The STARSkate program consists of figure skating skills in four areas -- Dance, Skills, Free Skate and Interpretive. Each of these have 6 levels: Preliminary, Jr. Bronze, Sr. Bronze, Jr. Silver, Sr. Silver and Gold. Skaters progress to the next level by taking Skate Canada Tests through a nationally standardized system in front of an evaluator.

Dance Test program teaches timing, musicality, rhythm interpretation, structure as well as basic skating skills such as edges, flow, control and unison.
Skating Skills are a combination of fundamental skating movements, executed on a pattern and skated solo to prescribed music. Skating skills is a mastery of the basic fundamentals of skating - edge quality, control, power and speed.
Free Skate Test program consists of execution of jumps, spins, footwork, field movements and stroking, either in isolation or performed to a sequence to music.
Interpetitive is to encourage and develop skaters' creativity, expression, musicality, movement, interpretation of music as well as the use of space, rhythm, line and style.

Aurora Skating Club has four sequential levels within our StarSkate (Figure Skating) program: Junior, Novice, Senior and Advanced. Each of these levels are broken into four programs: Fall, Winter, Spring and Extended Spring. All our Figure Skating programs are at the Aurora Family Leisure Complex.
